Analysis of Reconfigurable Frequency Selective Surface FSS Using Square Closed Split Rings

This contribution investigates the Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) and presents a design for reconfigurable FSS. The FSS is designed using the square ring, which can be set into two scenarios; closed and split. The FSS was built using the FR4 substrate of 40X40 mm dimensions, and ring size of 29x29 mm to serve the WLAN application of 2.45 GHz frequency. The closed ring FSS cell showed shielding at this frequency, while the split or open ring showed transmission through the FSS cell. On the other hand, the split ring FSS cell showed shielding at frequencies of 1.04 GHz, and 3.16 GHz, while passing the WLAN frequency. Switching of the ring by a PIN diode forms a reconfigurable FSS cell.
