Factors affecting the stability of suspensions of ferromagnetic particles in non-conducting and metallic liquids are discussed. The preparation and properties of suspensions of Fe

O
4
particles and metallic particles in various liquids are discussed and the progress in the development of new ferromagnetic liquids reviewed.
