Project-based learning of digital design: Using RGB LEDs

Learning digital design at RT level is enhanced by practical, lab-based assignments. These tasks, if chosen appropriately, can be highly motivating. Using FPGAs and development boards is a very suitable method for carrying out designs of different complexity. This paper presents an experience developed in the Advanced Digital Design course (4th year of the Degree) consisting of the programming of a ring of 16 RGB LEDs using the WS2812B protocol. These designs gradually increase in complexity and allow the operation of the developed system to be checked visually.
