Series-Parallel Resonant Current-Source DC-DC Converter with Wide Output Voltage Range

Certain applications require DC-DC converters that can regulate their output voltage in a wide range. This paper studies the feasibility of series-parallel resonant LCC current source topology (SPR-CSC) for such applications. Thanks to its buck-boost capability, such topology has the potential to achieve a wide output voltage range with reduced voltage and current stress on semiconductors. Topology and design guidelines of SPR-CSC for 1:4 regulation range are presented, along with a comparison against conventional series-resonant current-source (SR-CSC) topology using 3.3 kVA models of the converters. The study shows, that by proper design that takes advantage of buck and boost operation modes, the rms current stress of bridge transistors can be reduced by about 22.6%, while also reducing voltage stress across them by 6.7%.
