Securing the IoT: An In-Depth Analysis of Ubuntu Core Hardening Measures Using CIS LTS Guide

The rise in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has led to the search for an ideal operating system designed for IoT ecosystems. Various IoT -focused operating systems, such as Raspbian, Android Things, Ubuntu Core, LiteOS, Pyxis, and ARM Mbed, have emerged. Canonical, a major player in this field, has created Ubuntu Core, which emphasizes security parameters that are seamlessly integrated with numerous embedded systems to ensure overall safety. This research aims to evaluate the hardening measures that have been implemented in the Ubuntu Core operating system using the Center for Internet Security (CIS) Ubuntu Linux Long-Term Support (LTS) guide. The assessment covers critical parameters such as initial setup, services, network configuration, logging and auditing, access, authentication, authorization, and system maintenance. Furthermore, this study examines vulnerabilities associated with elements that are essential to the security infrastructure of the operating system.
