Educational Hardware Trainer for Teaching the Dual Active Bridge in a DC Grid

To teach the operating principle of the Dual Active Bridge, a hardware trainer along with design and simulation tools is proposed. Simplifying the teaching process of DAB operation and its modulation techniques is facilitated by the introduction of design tools. Simulation and animation tools play a crucial role in enhancing understanding by demonstrating the impact of modulation methods. Additionally, these tools aid in guiding the design of key parameters utilized in a DAB. While simulation offers insight, observing waveforms on an oscilloscope through a hardware trainer is essential for real-time visualization. The hardware trainer allows for direct observation of waveform changes and their influence on power transfer as parameters are manually adjusted. In this paper a hardware trainer is proposed that can be applied in undergraduate and graduate courses on power electronics.
