An Information Embedding Approach for FDA-MIMO Radar Based on Index Modulation

Recently, the spatial and frequency index modulation has been widely investigated as information embedding strategy for the dual-functional radar and communication sys-tem design, for its superiority in carrying information without affecting the radar functionality. In this paper, we propose an information embedding strategy based on waveform selection and index modulation for the frequency diverse array (FDA) based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The randomization in carrier frequencies can not only be utilized to convey messages but also incidentally decouple range and angle estimation. The signal model and the signal processing progress for both radar and communication subsystem are respectively presented and discussed. Simulation results of some major performance indicators, such as the radar resolution, the information rate and symbol error rate are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed joint system scheme.
