Research on a Novel Method for Grounding Fault Location in the HVDC Inverter Based on Temporal Characteristics of Electrical Quantities

Grounding fault in the HVDC converter has diversity and spatial temporal discrete, which makes fault analysis and protection coordination complicated. Because the mapping relationship between protection and fault type is not one-to-one, the same fault is uncertain, so it is necessary to accurately identify and locate the grounding faults in the converter area. Taking the inverter as research object, it is found that the temporal characteristics of the three-phase AC currents caused by grounding faults in the converter area are different. Based on this variability, a novel method to locate grounding faults in the converter area by using the temporal characteristics of the three phase AC minimum currents is proposed. Through the simulation results show the validity of the proposed method is verified. Moreover, the proposed method is less affected by the moment, which has a good robustness to resist fault conditions.
