Optimal Sizing of Hydrogen Storage for a Standalone Microgrid

This paper presents a mixed-integer second order conic programming (MISOCP) method to evaluate the system economy considering nonlinear efficiencies of power-to-hydrogen-to-power (P2H2P) subsystem and battery storage. Notably, this approach allows for the simultaneous and synergistic optimization of storage sizing and energy management. In the analysis, a case study on a microgrid with wind farm and PV station is investigated. The investigation aims to determine the sizes of different components and how the energy storage works in the system. To validate the proposed approach, simulation results obtained through MISOCP were compared with those from MILP. The study reveals consistent sizing for the battery and compressor, but a slight variation in the sizing of the P2H2P subsystem. The battery storage and P2H2P subsystem can ensure power stability by balancing the production and consumption of renewable energy in the system, enabling a reliable energy supply.
