Algorithm of Distribution Network Section Switch Identification and Protection Setting for Centralized Feeder Automation Based on Depth First Search

In centralized feeder automation, switches should be configured with different functions and corresponding protection value according to their positions in network. Section switches should be set with alarms to help the main station locate faults, and branch switches should be set with tripping to rapidly cut off faults in branch line and avoid affecting the main line. Incorrect configuration of functions and protection value settings will affect the effectiveness of feeder automation applications. A method of section switch identification and protection setting for centralized feeder automation based on depth first search algorithm is proposed. Based on the characteristics difference between section switch and branch switch is whether there is a connecting feeder at the back end, the section switch is therefore equivalent to switch on the path passing between any two substation outlet switches. depth first search algorithm is utilized to find the path from substation outlet switch to each tie switch, then section switches in the path was identified. The identified section switches are uniformly set to alarm value, which can adapt to network topology changes. The examples have verified the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.
