Measurement-based Adaptive Wide-area Damping Controller Design via EKF Estimation

Conventional damping controllers are designed and tuned offline based on the linearized model on one operating point, and their performance will be degraded during the variation of operating points. Compared with that, the measurement-based approach shows an advantage in updating the system model in real time by utilizing the high-resolution synchronized data acquired from phasor measurement units (PMUs). This paper proposes a measurement-based adaptive wide-area damping controller (WADC) via estimation of the oscillation mode based on an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Using the collected ring-down measurements and the measurement-driven approach, the power system transfer function model is estimated to capture the system’s dominant oscillatory behavior. Then, the parameter of the WADC is updated online based on the estimated residual angle of the transfer function model to track the variations of the oscillation mode caused by the change of system operating points. This approach doesn’t require a complex model of the power system. The effectiveness of the proposed measurement-based adaptive WADC is verified in both the simulation study on the 2-area 4-machine power system and the New England 10-machine 39-bus system. They can provide consistent damping performance than the conventional model-based WADC.
