Two-Bit Ultra-Wideband Phase-Coded Metamaterials for Electromagnetic Scattering Manipulation

A method of designing a two-bit ultra-wideband phase-coded reflective metamaterial is presented and used for further electromagnetic (EM) scattering manipulation. First, the anisotropic effective medium reflection theory is proposed, and a design method based on it is investigated. Second, two-bit ultra-wideband phase-coded metamaterials are designed utilizing the proposed method. The designed metamaterials are verified by the simulated multibeam deflection reflections. The simulation results show the metamaterials have a good beam modulation ability within an ultra-wideband from 8.0 to 18.0 GHz (76.9%) for dual-polarizations. For demonstration, four metamaterials are designed to target radar cross section (RCS) reduction and carpet cloaks, respectively. The prototypes are fabricated and measured. As for RCS reduction, the random scattering field is reduced by more than 16 dBsm. Regarding the carpet cloaks, the EM scattering manipulation results show good agreement with simulations. Benefiting from the merits of ultra-wideband properties, the proposed method can be used to design metamaterials for wideband EM scattering manipulation.
