New Approaches to Automation of Viscometric Studies of Polymer Solutions

A new approach to viscosity measurement is proposed, which is a modernization of the Stokes method and allows for multiple measurements in automatic mode. This approach, among other things, makes it possible to record the dependence of viscosity on temperature with a significant reduction in operating costs compared to existing commercially available viscometers. Automation is provided due to the fact that the measurement mode is controlled by a program installed on the user's smartphone. The connection of the smartphone with the measuring device is carried out via a radio channel using a Bluetooth module. This program also processes the primary data of measurements carried out by the measuring device, which makes it possible to significantly simplify its electronic part. The principle of operation of the device is based on the use of a rotating frame, on which a tube filled with the test solution is attached, in which a ball is also placed, which makes it possible to record the viscosity. This frame also contains a thermostatic element, a temperature meter and controlled magnets that allow to fix the position of the ball in each of the end positions inside the tube. The mode of multiple measurements is provided due to the fact that the ball, which has fallen into the lower position after the completion of the measurement, is fixed by a magnetic field, after which the tube is turned over and the measurement is repeated again.
