Development of a methodological approach for the analysis of urban metabolism

An increase in the population of cities and the tendency to form urban agglomerations inevitably lead to more complex transport, energy and utility infrastructure. Which in turn increases the requirements for managing and streamlining the flow of energy resources and waste generated in urban areas. The term ‘‘urban metabolism” appears in the scientific and technical literature in the mid-60s. At the same time, urban metabolism is often considered in the context of political, historical or social sciences, leaving out of focus the energy, technological and environmental aspects of the functioning of the metropolis.
