Microgrid Model for Evaluating the Operational Dynamics of Solar-Powered Hydrogen Production

Solar energy technology plays a pivotal role in the sustainable generation of hydrogen. While traditional methods rely on fossil fuels like natural gas, coal, and oil, this study delves into eco-friendly alternatives. Despite the higher cost, green hydrogen has spurred the development of cost-effective, low-carbon technologies. A microgrid model is presented, featuring a self-contained DC islanded system supplying power to an electrolyzer using solar arrays and energy storage. This model serves as a versatile tool for evaluating the operational dynamics of sustainable hydrogen production. Over a week-long timeframe, it assesses hydrogen generation characteristics, leveraging solar energy directly or via integrated energy storage. With a multi-domain framework covering electrical, thermal liquid, and thermal gas aspects, the model offers a holistic exploration of green hydrogen production processes. Through simulation, the feasibility and efficiency of renewable energy-based hydrogen production in off-grid scenarios are examined, contributing to sustainable energy solutions.
