Improvement of Data Rate of SWIPT System in Phantom by Integrated Metamaterial-Inspired Absorber for Biomedical Applications

This paper proposes a metamaterial-inspired absorber designed to enhance isolation in a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system through biological tissue. The study delves into the metamaterial perspective, focusing on the characteristics of split-ring resonators (SRRs) within the proposed absorber unit cells. The absorber exhibits a significant real part near -1 and an imaginary part close to 0 in permeability. A 10-mm-thick human body equivalent phantom is used for the SWIPT system's evaluation. Experimental results indicate that embedding this absorber between power and signal ports in both Tx and Rx of a SWIPT system results in a 3 dB improvement in isolation performance. Concurrently, with the assistance of the proposed absorber, the datarate improves by 3.6 Mb/s, allowing signals to be transmitted with 5 dBm weaker power than the original system.
