An Investigation into the Impact of Symmetrical Voltage Sag on the Performance of Three Phase Induction Motors-Based Simulation

We study the problem of symmetrical voltage sag and its effect on the characteristics of three phase induction motors (IMs) using Matlab/Simulink; we only consider symmetrical voltage sag since it is the most severe type of voltage sag. We consider three scenarios of operation: full load, partial load and no load. In each scenario, we start our investigation on symmetrical voltage sag of 50% magnitude by studying its effect on the motor torque, speed, currents, efficiency, and power factor, and then we extend our investigation on symmetrical voltage sag of different magnitudes (ranging from 90% to 10% magnitude) by studying its effect on the motor input power, currents, and speed. Our simulation results show that depending on the level of the motor loading and the magnitude of symmetrical voltage sag, the motor characteristics mentioned above may be negatively or positively affected. The findings of this study will provide a deep understanding of the behavior of three phase IMs when subjected to voltage sag and offer guidance for future research on the topic of power quality disturbances and their influence on induction machines.
