Real-time Loss of Life and Health Assessment of Distribution Transformers

Transformers have an important role in the distribution sector of electrical energy. Currently, real-time monitoring of distribution transformers is not a standard practice in India. Prompt and accurate assessment of transformer health is crucial to prevent potential damages caused by aging and faults. This paper presents a methodology of real-time condition monitoring of distribution transformer (DTR) and estimation of its loss of life (LOL) & Health Index (HI). Top-oil temperature, DTR loading, power factor, and oil level were selected as possible monitoring parameters and DTR HI was generated. The real-time results were provided to the distribution companies (DISCOMs) through web-portal & mobile based application for assessment of DTR health and necessary corrective action(s). A pilot was conducted by implementing smart meter/sensors on five distribution transformers to show the benefits of the proposed method.
