Coil Design of Integrated LCC-S Compensation Topology for Wireless Charging

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) represents a promising solution for the battery charging requirements of electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics, such as cellphones. There are various compensation topologies for WPT systems, with the inductor-capacitor-capacitor-series (LCC-S) compensation topology demonstrating superior performance and safety characteristics. However, the bulky LCC inductor poses a challenge to the portability and compactness of WPT. This study introduces an integrated coil design for the LCC-S compensation topology, where the key innovation involves the integration of the LCC inductor within the transmitter coil. Notably, optimizations have been implemented to mitigate undesired coupling effects between the LCC inductor and the receiver coil. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations have been conducted on Ansys Maxwell to optimize the proposed design and assess the coupling between coils. The validation of the design is substantiated through FEA simulation results. In addition, an experimental setup is constructed and verified the operation of the proposed coil design.
