Impact of Synthesized ICE on Hybrid Drive Efficiency and Operation Behaviour

Automotive drive electrification has the biggest impact on emission reduction and decarbonizing individual mobility. Especially hybridization allows short term emission reductions and is a viable solution for markets, where no sufficient electrification is possible and inadequate charging infrastructure exists. New aggregate and drive system concepts can be developed and found with computer aided synthesis. In a DFG funded project we are developing a drive synthesis, including an internal combustion engine synthesis as well as transmission synthesis. The syntheses are controlled via an artificial intelligence based control algorithm including engineering knowledge. In this paper we are focusing on the ICE synthesis and the impact of ICE concepts on the drive system characteristics, the fuel economy, performance as well as operation behavior. It showed, that the ICE design has a significant impact on the overall efficiency and also impacts the operation behaviour significantly, especially in terms of load point shifting and thus the share of pure electric operation in the WLTC.
