Design and Optimization of Wound Field Synchronous Machines for Traction Applications

This paper focuses on designing a wound field synchronous machine (WFSM) to meet the specifications of the Toyota Prius motor. Electromagnetic performances such as phase back EMF, torque ripple, and cogging torque are presented for both designs. Also, it presents efficiency maps and detailed loss comparisons at the same operating speed. A comparison between the 2D and 3D FEA models is presented for the WFSM. Finally, this paper presents the effectiveness of parametric and topology optimization for the WFSM in traction applications.
