Thermal Model of a Soft Magnetic Composite EV Permanent Magnet Traction Motor

This paper introduces a thermal analysis of a soft magnetic composite (SMC) material permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with complex geometry designed for electric vehicles (EV) applications. The study utilizes a lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) as a rapid tool which is particularly beneficial for motors with complex geometries that are challenging and time-consuming to analyze using finite element analysis (FEA) software. The study validates this method using temperature sensors within the motor. The results show that the LPTN method provides a closer approximation to experimental findings compared to the FEA method.
