Genderless modular connection mechanism capable of connection detection between modules

Next-generation robots are being asked to have the ability to change topology to cope with a variety of tasks flexibly. To meet this requirement, we propose a novel genderless modular connection mechanism. Enabling genderless connections between modules increases the number of possible connections. The developed mechanism can withstand and transmit large loads using the method of a machine tool interlocking chuck that holds the workpiece. External connections can be configured with system-defined functions, such as electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic connections, and can be transmitted between modules. It is easy to expand transmission capacity by adding several external connections. Additionally, under power-on conditions, it can also establish and detect a connection between two modules through four types of relative orientations at 90° intervals and transmit connecting information to the system.
