Developing Diesel Truck to Electric: A Practical Case

International Energy Agency (IEA) pointed out that adopting electric vehicles (EVs) has become a general trend under various countries' net-zero carbon emission policy goals [1]. By 2030, the global sales of EVs will account for 35% of the global total. This paper proposes an electric truck (E-truck) that uses Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO
4
) battery modules (537.6V/180Ah) as the power source, and the powertrain replaces the engine with a PMSM (95kW/605Nm/1500rpm). The vehicle control unit (VCU) is the supervisory controller of the E-truck, it is responsible for most processes relating to the functional aspects of the vehicle by CANBUS, such as torque coordination, operation and gearshift strategies, high-voltage and low-voltage coordination, charging control, on board diagnosis, monitoring and reports, thermal management and much more for electrified and connected powertrains, etc. This paper presents a successfully modified E-truck's design and actual vehicle performance test.
