Development and Evaluation of a Wireless System for Remote Monitoring of Rumen Temperature in Dairy Cows

This paper presents a wireless monitoring system designed for remotely tracking the rumen temperature of dairy cows. The system utilizes commercially available RF and LoRa modules, enabling the transmission of temperature data from within the cow to external IoT devices. Both modules operate on the 433 MHz frequency. From measured results, the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values range between -80 to -90 dBm at pillar positions. Along the cow's body, the RSSI values fall within the range of -67 to -80 dBm. Additionally, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values along the cow's body exhibit improvement compared to those along the pillow, showing a difference of 2 to 4 dB within the 0 to 10 dB range. Importantly, LoRa offers a significant advantage over RF in terms of transmission range, reaching up to 5 meters compared to 2.5 meters for RF module, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor farm environments. This system has the potential to revolutionize smart livestock monitoring by providing a non-invasive and efficient way to track the health of dairy cows.
