A Switchable Transmissive Metasurface Based on Polarization Conversion

A reconfigurable polarization-conversion metasurface consisting of a pair of orthogonal metal grating and a split ring loaded by an active element is proposed to control the polarization and propagation of electromagnetic waves dynamically. When the PIN diode is OFF, the transmitted linearly polarized incident wave is converted into cross-polarized wave. When the PIN diode is ON, the co-polarized wave of the linearly polarized incident wave will be fully reflected. A metasurface sample composed of 10×10 elements is fabricated. The measured results indicate that the proposed metasurface can effectively achieve dynamic switching of propagation modes and polarization conversion within a bandwidth of 31%.
