Ink to Pixels: AI's Impact on Preserving History and Heritage - A Bibliometric Journey

Preserving our cultural heritage encounters various obstacles caused by degradation, conflicts and natural calamities. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool in this effort, transforming the way we document, restore and share historical knowledge. In this research paper, we conduct a thorough analysis of 93 scholarly publications from 58 different sources spanning the years 2013 to 2023. Our study identifies influential authors, prominent journals, influential countries and the interconnectedness of various research strands in this multidisciplinary field. The findings highlight an increasing interest in the subject along with global collaborations and technological advancements. The study also highlighted key challenges such as ethical considerations, technical hurdles, socio cultural factors and ensuring equal access for all. The importance of responsible AI implementation is emphasized as well as promoting collaboration between technology experts and heritage specialists while also safeguarding intangible cultural aspects. This study provides valuable insights for future research endeavors and contributes to the ongoing discussion on AI's impact on the preservation of our cultural heritage.
