Assessment of Seismic Performance for Multi Storey Steel Frame Building on Sloped Terrain with Setbacks

The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the seismic performance of various structural configurations, particularly focusing on buildings constructed on sloped terrains and those incorporating setbacks. A total of eight distinct models were Examined, each differing in the degree of slope at the base and the positioning of setbacks. Using the advanced capabilities of Etabs Software, the research conducted seismic simulations to evaluate how these structures would respond under seismic loading conditions. The analytical process was precise, concentrating on key performance indicators such as displacement, the forces generated by earthquakes, and Storey drift. These metrics are crucial in understanding the resilience of a structure during seismic events. The study meticulously documented how incremental changes in the slope of the terrain and the introduction of setbacks at various levels can significantly impact a building's structural integrity during an earthquake. One of the pivotal findings of this research was the observation that buildings situated on sloping grounds tend to exhibit poor seismic behavior. This is attributed to the uneven distribution of seismic forces due to the irregularity of the ground. Conversely, structures that featured setbacks, particularly those located at higher storeys, demonstrated superior seismic performance. The strategic placement of these setbacks contributes to a more favorable distribution of seismic forces, thereby enhancing the building's overall stability and safety. The insights gained from this study could be instrumental in guiding future construction practices, ensuring that buildings are not only aesthetically pleasing but also structurally sound and capable of withstanding the rigors of seismic activity. The implications of these findings are particularly significant for regions prone to earthquakes, where the adoption of such design considerations could mean the difference between devastation and resilience.
