Demonstration of a Compact and Wideband FMCW Radar System for Breast Cancer Detection

This paper demonstrates an FMCW radar system operating in the 6–14 GHz frequency range suitable for breast cancer detection. The transceiver and the LO generation are realized using off-the-shelf components assembled on two printed circuit boards. We verify the functionality of the system by radar measurements on a metal plate in a medium that replicates the dielectric properties of breast tissue. The range resolution for the measurements is less than 1 cm, Compared to the state of the art, no expensive RF laboratory equipment is required for the entire measurement setup.
