Smart Metering Deployment Status and Challenges: Jordan as A Study Case

With the evolving of smart grid networks, it is essential to understand smart meters' basic operations and their roll out and deployment status, especially in a developing country like Jordan. These Internet-connected devices maintain a two-way connection with other devices in the smart grid architecture. This paper aims to give an overview on the smart grid network architecture with an emphasis on smart meters, their characteristics, and their certain key functionalities. In addition, the main wired and wireless communication protocols that are widely used in smart meters are discussed. Additionally, an overview on the adoption and deployment situation on smart meters in a developing country like Jordan is provided by giving information about the generation, transmission, and distribution sectors' current smart meter situation in Jordan. The paper then summarizes the main challenges associated with smart meters' deployment and adoption, which help decision makers in taking the proper mitigation actions thus having a wider deployment and adoption for smart meters.
