Assessment of the Absorbed Power Density

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) [1] and the IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (IEEE ICES) [2] introduced the absorbed power density (APD) to limit human exposure to emerging new near-field transmitters operating at frequencies >6 GHz. We discuss how APD can be experimentally assessed with known uncertainty. We examine various methods and show that the dosimetric probe method is the most sensitive. This work contributes to the development of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) compliance testing standard for APD.
