The effect of polymer material properties on partial discharge vibration signals using EYDF-πPSG

To detect partial discharge (PD) signals generated by poleymer insulation in power equipment, the generation and propagation characteristics of PD vibration signals are studied in polymer materials. Firstly, the generation and propagation of PD vibration signals in polymer insulation are described as a second-order model. Then, based on the theoretical analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis and acoustic propagation experiments reveals that polymers with higher Young’s modulus exhibit lower initial amplitude of vibration signal generated by partial discharge (PD). Meanwhile, Polymers with higher viscous damping not only display smaller initial vibration amplitudes and greater propagation attenuation, but also demonstrate shorter signal durations. Furthermore, the phenomenon is found and certificated that crystallization plays a crucial role in vibration propogation in poleymer materials. Increased crystallinity will lead to increase viscous damping coefficient of poleymers. Finally, Erbium and ytterbium co-doped π Phase Shifted Grating (EYDF-π-PSG) laser was used to measure PD vibration signals. Vibration signals detection experiments are finished in crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) and methylsilicone rubber (MQ), seperately. Compared to XLPE material with higher modulus value and viscous damping coefficient, the PD viberation signals are easily detected in MQ material.
