Enhancing Water Quality Control and Monitoring in Shrimp Farms With LoRaWAN Technology

This research introduces a water quality control and monitoring system tailored for small-scale aquaculture setups, utilizing Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology. The purpose of this prototype is to alleviate the repetitive, labor-intensive, and time-consuming process of collecting and analyzing water quality parameters in shrimp farms, which are also prone to data inaccuracies. Additionally, the system is equipped to automatically implement corrective measures when deviations occur in key water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO). Using Internet of Things (IoT) technology, this system empowers farm operators to instantly access real-time information about their pond environments using internet-connected computers and smartphones. In the Sensor Node located in the center of the pond, industrial-grade water quality sensors systematically record temperature, pH, salinity, and dissolved oxygen at 15-minute intervals. This water quality data is then transmitted to the IoT Gateway Module through LoRa communication technology. The IoT Gateway Module connects to the internet via a microcontroller with WiFi capability, and the web-based application displays the water quality measurements. To ensure continuous operational power, the Sensor Node integrates a solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery system, which can supply sufficient power for uninterrupted operation spanning multiple days.
