Patterns and Positions of Concentric Ring Electrodes for Electrical Impedance Tomography

The potential widespread use of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) warrants exploration in improving the imaging resolution of the technique. EIT operates through the use of electrodes in contact with the subject, with one layout being rings of electrodes around a cylindrical environment to view the subsurface within. The utilization of internal electrodes in this method can improve the resulting image resolution, especially when dealing with inclusions far from external electrodes. With EIDORS tool, this study simulated the performance of internal electrodes when designed with different parameters, to provide insight on what traits are valuable when designing a concentric ring design of electrodes for EIT. From the results, it can be concluded that smaller distances and more quantities of electrodes result in clearer images of the subsurface. The adjacent electrode stimulation pattern (0-1) showed better results over the 0-3 pattern. Further studies on stimulation patterns are recommended, as well as exploration on optimizing performance against complexity of the concentric ring electrode design.
