Nitrification in Aquaponics for Sustainable System in a Symbiotic Environment using Genetic Algorithm

Aquaponics is the process of growing plants and cultivating fish in a single water cycle. This study aims to develop a sustainable Aquaponics system using nitrification to balance the ecosystem. The system combines hydroponic plants, biofilters, and fish culture. The genetic algorithm repeatedly modifies a population of individual solutions. It maintains and corrects factors such as pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen to their safe levels to maintain sustainability while being coded in the monitoring and correction hardware using Raspberry Pi and Arduino. Twenty-eight days of testing results in the growth of mint herb and tilapia with percent growth of 52.50% and 92.50%, respectively. With this, the growth ratio is 13:23, benefiting the fish more than the plant. Additionally, the ammonia concentration and other factors changed abruptly in the first two weeks but became consistent for the last two weeks. Based on the results, the growth of plants and fish and the consistency of the factors conclude that nitrification is present in the system.
