High-Speed-Gluing in Battery Cell Manufacturing: Structured Analysis and Roadmap for elevating the Technology-Readiness-Level

The lamination and manufacturing of an electrode-separator-composite (ESC), as an intermediate product in the battery manufacturing, has emerged as a promising avenue for increasing productivity and improving cell performance. In addition to the conventional hot lamination, high speed gluing has been the subject in the research field of battery production.Despite its advantages, the widespread adoption of high-speed gluing is hindered by a limited understanding of the process, especially its electrochemical effects on cell level, which have yet to be comprehensively explored. To address the open questions of the industry the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the high-speed gluing Process in its current form is determined and a technology elevation scheme is presented. The scheme delineates four distinct approaches, aimed at advancing both product and process development.The main result of this conceptual work is the analysis of the current state of high-speed-gluing in battery cell manufacturing, regarding the TRL and a comprehensive scheme that provides the opportunity to unlock the industrial potential of high-speed gluing of an ESC for battery manufacturing.
