On the Speed of Arc Cooling in Air and SF6

, proving support to the design of SF

-free high voltage circuit breakers. Based on a slender arc in a supersonic nozzle, it is shown why the material properties control the radial temperature profile of the arc column and how this affects the behavior of arc cooling.
