A Novel Topology of an Axial Flux Type Synchronous Motor

Due to rapid urbanization, urban air mobility (UAM) has been attracting considerable attention as a new mode of transportation. An electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL), which is an aircraft for UAM, requires a motor with high specific power. Axial flux type motors have high specific power and high utilization of space. Meanwhile, the demagnetization of the permanent magnets reduces the output of the permanent magnet type motors and the supply of rare-earth elements is unstable. Therefore, a novel topology of an axial flux type wound rotor synchronous motor (AFWRSM) is proposed. In this paper, the structure and principle of the novel topology are described and design of the topology is carried out. Also, the electromagnetic characteristic of the proposed topology is analyzed by using the finite element analysis (FEA).
