Study on Equivalent 2-D Finite Element Analysis Model for Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motor Considering the End Effects in Radial Direction

With recent developments in analysis and manufacturing technology, interest in axial flux permanent magnet motor (AFPMM) is increasing. To accurately analyze AFPMM, 3-dimensional finite element analysis (3-D FEA) is required. However, although 3-D FEA provides high accuracy, it requires significant analysis time and resources. In this paper, we propose a equivalent 2-dimensional finite element analysis (2-D FEA) model to overcome the shortcomings of 3-D FEA. To improve the analysis accuracy of the 2-D equivalent model, we propose an equivalent 2-D FEA model of an AFPMM that considers the radial end effect. After dividing the 3-D model in the radial direction to build a 2-D equivalent model, the accuracy of analysis is improved by using a model that can take into account the leakage flux occurring in the radial direction for the radial innermost and outermost equivalent models. The analysis precision using the equivalent 2-D FEA model will be verified by comparing it with the analysis results of the 3-D FEA.
