Improving Public Security: Application of YOLOv7 for Vehicle Detection

This research paper focuses on the practical implementation of the YOLOv7 deep learning model for vehicle detection in real-time which is quite necessary for modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In the course of increased demand for smart vehicle detections to handle traffic efficiently and ensure safety, this study evaluates the YOLOv7 model performance in different traffic and environmental scenarios. A large dataset with a diversity of scenes including urban and rural scenes across different light conditions is used to train and test the model; for this purpose, emphasis is placed on precision and efficiency. The work discusses an advanced methodology involving refined training methods, exact testing standards, and evaluation of the output using metrics that include precision, recall, F1-score, and Intersection over Union (IoU). The outcomes reveal the YOLOv7’s potential in detecting class objects with high precision and recall in all scenarios, and it is apparent that the model is the most accurate in a daytime environment of rural areas. Results will be interpreted and it will be revealed that YOLOv7 is a promising object detection model for ITS that can improve real-time data processing profoundly, though weak performance in low-light conditions calls for there is still room for further enhancement. Therefore, the conclusion proves the model to be scalable and also the possibility of its integration into ITS applications. Nevertheless, more efforts are needed to establish effective autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicle technologies. This study enhances the field of vehicle detection technology by contributing findings that orient researchers toward higher-level and reliable ITS implementations. The ultimate recommendations are aimed toward YOLOv7 as the default model in the evolving development of traffic monitoring systems globally.
