Investigation of Wideband Spline-Based Spearhead-Shaped Printed Antenna for EMC Radiated Emission Testing

This paper investigates the feasibility of a spline-based spearhead-shaped printed antenna (SSPA) for EMC radiated emission testing. The SSPA is designed to have a wideband frequency response with the main bandwidth from around the frequency of 1.6 GHz to more than 20 GHz with a notch band at around the frequency of 1.9 GHz to 3.47 GHz. The investigation is carried out by comparing the performance of SSPA with the standard Ultralog antenna used in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)/electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing. Three frequency bands are emitted from the signal sources, i.e., Wi-Fi access points and signal generators, which produce emissions at the frequency bands of 2.4 GHz, 4 GHz, and 5.8 GHz. As the reference, the Ultralog antenna is capable of detecting emissions in those three bands at the signal levels of $111.14 \mathrm{~dB} \mu \mathrm{V} / \mathrm{m}, 88.60 \mathrm{~dB} \mu \mathrm{V} / \mathrm{m}$, and 110.87 $\mathrm{dB} \mu \mathrm{V} / \mathrm{m}$, respectively. Meanwhile, the SSPA can also detect well the emission at the frequencies of 2.4GHz and 4GHz bands with the levels of $102.51 \mathrm{~dB} \mu \mathrm{V} / \mathrm{m}$ and $84.57 \mathrm{~dB} \mu \mathrm{V} / \mathrm{m}$, respectively. In general, the SSPA has good prospects for further development by considering several recommendations.
