Experimental Studies of High Frequency Performances of Plated Through Hole and Coaxial Via in Printed Circuit Boards Up to 110 GHz

This paper shows the high frequency transmission performances experimentally for plated through hole (PTH) and coaxial via (CV) in printed circuit boards (PCBs) up to 110 GHz, by using double-sided probing techniques of scattering parameter (S-parameter) measurements. The short-open-load-reciprocal (SOLR) calibration is done to set the measured reference planes to the probe tips with aids of a commercial impedance standard substrate (ISS) in short/open/load standards and the CV as the reciprocal standard. The measured results indicate the PTH has transmission performance similar to a planar transmission line below 72 GHz while the CV can extend to 85 GHz with some little ripples due to impedance mismatch in this specific study case.
