An Electromagnetic Interference Compensation Method for Dense Antenna Arrays

Dense antenna arrays have the potential to increase the effective channel number of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, which could cope with the high demands for data rates in future communication systems. However, the strong coupling effect caused by the tight antenna elements will deteriorate the desired transmitting beams, and then cause severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems. To address this problem, this paper proposes a beam coupling compensation method for dense antenna arrays. Specifically, the mutual coupling effect is described as the modal excitation coefficients between different antenna elements. Combined with the beam synthesis results based on the array factor (AF), the actual excitation of each antenna element is modified to achieve the desired beampattern, which is significant to solve the EMI problems. This proposed method can handle the beam synthesis problems for dense antenna arrays without any decoupling devices with high isolation. Finally, some numerical cases are presented to validate the proposed method.
