LOFAR2.0 Monitoring and Control Design

In this work we present the Monitoring & Control (M&C) software-architecture design for the LOFAR2.0 radio telescope. Including a radical shift to embracing Free & Open-Source Software (FOSS), decentralized and decoupled data storage, and the use of industry-standard protocols for data and control interfaces including OPC-UA [1] and Tango Controls [2]. We demonstrate that this design outperforms the previous design in accordance to a set of metrics from well established software quality characteristics such as maintainability and transferability.
