Security Issues in Industrial Internet-of-Things: Threats, Attacks and Solutions

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) represents a significant advancement beyond the Internet of Things (IoT), promoting the improvement of Industry 4.0. IIoT facilitates spanning the current system by introducing wirelessly interconnected devices in industrial settings. While inheriting some vulnerabilities from IoT, IIoT’s sensor-rich infrastructure demands heightened attention to tailor existing security measures. Despite ongoing security model enhancements, opportunities remain to effectively detect and prevent emerging threats. This work addresses the continuing challenge of securing IIoT devices against a spectrum of cyber attacks, identifying common threats, and outlining practical strategies for their mitigation. With a specific emphasis on Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, privacy breaches, IP spoofing, Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks, and eavesdropping, we explore contemporary solutions and prevention methods. Furthermore, we investigate secure authentication protocols and anomaly detection mechanisms to strengthen security without compromising device performance. This study aims to contribute to developing a more secure IIoT environment by providing insights into implementing efficient security measures that can be adapted to fight evolving threats within the Industry 4.0 landscape.
