Finger-mounted tactile display of softness for virtual reality

Wearable human-machine interfaces face significant hurdles due to the current absence of effective, comfortable, and affordable actuation technologies capable of conveying tactile softness in virtual-reality systems. Such technologies are crucial for accurately replicating the sensation of softness in virtual objects, serving diverse purposes, ranging from professional training simulations (e.g., in healthcare) to serious game-based cognitive rehabilitation, sensory-motor therapy, minimally invasive surgery, education, gaming, and tele-presence systems for enriched social interactions through touch. Presently, there exists a gap in the market for wearable devices that seamlessly integrate functional effectiveness with simplicity of design, lightweight construction, compact dimensions, and electrical safety. Recently, our team described a tactile display technology employing fingertip-mounted inflatable chambers, powered by a compact and cost-effective portable unit. Building upon this innovation, we are currently conducting ongoing investigations into the tactile perception of softness achievable through this display when utilized alongside virtual-reality environments.
