Simulating Hundreds of Power Converters without Model Simplification: Is it Possible in Offline and Realtime Modes?

The modern power converter-dominated power system requires high-accuracy electromagnetic transients (EMT) simulation in very large scale. State-of-the-art simulation systems can provide either high-accuracy EMT simulation for few power converters or root mean square (RMS) simulation for large-scale power systems. For modern converter-dominated power systems consisting of hundreds of grid-connected power converters, i.e. photovoltaic power station or wind farm, simplification of converter modeling is required, i.e. average model or aggregation model. Is it possible to simulate this kind of scenarios without any model simplification? The answer is: yes. In this paper a novel simulation platform and process targeting to solve this challenge is introduced and demonstrated by case studies. With the help of this simulation platform, multiple simulation studies and verifications, i.e., system stability, fault ride-through (FRT), etc. can be performed at the highest accuracy level.
