Analysis of Electric Field Characteristics and Defect Diagnosis for Local Cable Breakage

Frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) is an effective method for diagnosing cable defects. The simulation models of FDR are built based on the distributed parameters of cables. Different types and severities of defects exhibit distinct distributed parameters. However, current studies have yet to conduct a quantitative analysis on how various defects influence the distributed parameters. Consequently, the parameters in simulation models are often determined subjectively, relying on empirical judgment. That leads to inaccurate correspondence between the simulation models and the actual defect conditions. This paper investigates the electric field distribution characteristics of local cable breakage defects with different severities, calculates the distributed parameters and analyzes their evolution rules. Subsequently, these calculated parameters are introduced into the FDR models, enabling successful location and identification of the cable breakage defects. This paper holds significant importance for the quantitative analysis of breakage defect characteristics and advances the theoretical and simulation researches in FDR.
