An Iterative FPGA Algorithm for IPMSM Rotor Position Estimation with GaN Inverter

With the inverter consisting of GaN semi-conductors, the switching frequency of the inverter can be significantly increased compared to an IGBT in-verter, which can certainly bring many benefits for the sensorless control of PMSM based on high-frequency (HF) carrier-signal injection. To take advantage of the benefits with higher switching frequency, the well known algorithms for HF signal injection and the rotor position estimation must be improved and implemented in an FPGA to achieve a higher frequency of the injected signal and more dynamic signal processing. In this paper, a sensorless rotor position estimation algorithm using HF square wave voltage is ultilized and improved for the FPGA programming. Using the HDL Coder (Hardware description language), the validated algorithm is successfully tested in a test bench consisting of a interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), 3-phase-GaN-inverter and a real time computer.
