Decarbonisation Pathways for Empowering Telecom Networks Using Renewable Energy

As the number and power density of base stations throughout world have increased exponentially in recent years, so has the energy consumption of telecommunications networks in the country. The objective of this research is to assess the viability of integrating energy storage systems with wind and photovoltaic (PV) energy sources in order to provide telecommunication networks with uninterrupted power supply and cost-effectiveness. In addition, by employing an economic model that includes the Leontief and Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) production functions, this study assesses the likelihood of achieving sustainable energy generation for mobile networks. There is one potential power supply scenario incorporated in the proposed solution:2.5 kW per PV array and 2 kW per wind turbine. The results of the simulations indicate that both methods successfully met the power demands of the base stations across the nation by implementing a versatile control system for the energy storage system's charge and discharge. In addition, it was discovered that wind and PV energy have the potential to serve as sustainable energy sources for base stations, and that an energy storage system provides a critical energy supply guarantee.
